Pezego’s lightweight pest identification model, developed by Prof. Po Yang’s research team at the University of Sheffield, accurately recognises the key insect species affecting UK cereal crops in the field. Trained on an extensive two-year dataset collected from over 20 farms across England, the model leverages 10,000+ high-resolution well-annotated images and 300 minutes of video footage, combined with multimodal inputs detailing crop varieties, regional agricultural conditions, and climate dynamics. Beyond identification, Pezego incorporates an advanced expert system, co-developed with the University of Liverpool and ADAS. By integrating large language model (LLM) techniques with domain expertise and authoritative sources, the system provides climate-smart decision support for 38 major pests, including cabbage stem flea beetles, grain aphids, and peach potato aphids, across 10 key field crops, such as cereals, oilseeds, and potatoes.
By combining AI-powered detection with expert agronomic intelligence, Pezego enhances Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, enabling farmers to make data-driven decisions, reduce pesticide reliance, and promote sustainable, resilient farming.
